(Beaver Dam) New Beginnings Homeless Shelter in Beaver Dam continues their search for a new home for their men’s facility. In September, the non-profit announced that it would be moving on from their current location on Madison Street, next to the Chapel of the Archangels. Fr. Mike Erwin, who is a board member with New Beginnings, says in the interim the organization has reverted to their old way of housing men in need by offering hotel vouchers. He says this is a pricier model, costing around $50 a night, and that owning their facility would cut that cost in half.
Erwin says while reconstructing St. Katharine Drexel Parish, the church needed to purchase the neighboring home for their youth center. A group of retired sisters used the building while ministering and moved out a year ago. During a recent appearance on WBEV’s Community Comment, Erwin said the home could serve as a permanent location and that St. Katharine is considering selling just the house portion of the structure to New Beginnings for a reasonable price. He says the organization is keeping their options open.
Erwin says New Beginnings is also looking for donations, including in-kind, to help establish a permanent men’s shelter. He says the women and family shelter is still doing well and has not been affected by the change to their men’s facility. For more information call 920-885-9559.
