Badger Honor Flight “All-American Cookout” Fundraiser Set For Saturday

(Beaver Dam) A military veteran says the Badger Honor Flight is a must for anyone who has served in the armed forces. The Madison-based non-profit flies veterans to Washington D.C. to visit historic military monuments. Some of the sites include the Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Iwo Jima, World War II, Korean, Vietnam, and Air Force monuments. Don Zilewicz, with the Beaver Dam wing of the Badger Honor Flight, says there are few words that can describe what takes place during the trip. Zilewicz, who served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969, says returning from Washington D.C. can be just as memorable. Organizers will encourage the public to head to Madison to welcome veterans back home. During a recent appearance on WBEV’s Community Comment, Zilewicz said following his flight last fall family members made his journey’s end unforgettable. He says his eldest daughter printed out t-shirts that had “hero to many” written on the back and was given to all his family members to wear. The tenth annual All-American Cookout is planned for this Saturday (March 14th). Brats and hamburger plates will run $8 while the hotdog plate is $5. All proceeds go towards the Badger Honor Flight. The cookout will run from 11am to 3pm at the Chapel of the Archangels in Beaver Dam.
