Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over Campaign Begins Friday

(Juneau) Law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin will be joining in an effort to target alcohol and drug impaired driving.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign begins today and goes through New Year’s Day. Authorities say the mission of this campaign is to enhance public safety and prevent needless tragedies by discouraging people from making the dangerous decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

During the last holiday season, there were 470 crashes across the state that involved an impaired driver. Law enforcement officials say alcohol and drugs can have a significant impact on a driver’s focus and ability to maintain control behind the wheel. Last year, there were 6,230 alcohol-related crashes that killed 155 people. Alcohol contributed to more than a quarter of all traffic fatalities.

Tips to help mitigate impaired driving crashes include identifying a designated sober driver and calling 911 if you suspect someone is driving impaired. Authorities also note that some bars and restaurants have programs to provide patrons a safe ride home.
