(Juneau) There are just a few days left in this year’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” drunk driving campaign. The campaign runs through New Year’s Day. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says there are way too many poor decisions by people deciding to get behind the wheel while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
“You see people weaving out on the roads and crashing and endangering themselves and others,” says Schmidt.
The sheriff says that this decision is a choice.
“It is not a disease to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and operate a motor vehicle while impaired,” Schmidt says. “There may be a mental disorder or a[n] alcohol disorder that you can call it before getting behind the wheel. That decision is separate of that decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and drive down the road.”
Schmidt says that the department takes this issue very seriously and that his staff will make an arrest if necessary.
