(Juneau) Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers recently proposed budget includes an overhaul to the Department of Corrections. Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says the proposals impact public safety.
“Public safety is pretty much what I do,” says Schmidt. “We want to make sure that whatever the plan the prison comes up with isn’t going to impact public safety.”
Schmidt says that when it comes to the Waupun Correctional Institution, he would not be opposed to the governor’s proposed changes.
“Changing [the] Waupun Correctional [Institution] to a medium security prison would certainly benefit my agency because we would have a lot less crime to deal with because [of a] different category of inmates.”
The Sheriff says there is also a possibility of the Green Bay Correctional Institution being shut down and not being replaced.
