Columbus Man Accused Of Physically Assaulting An Officer

(Columbus) A Columbus man was charged Thursday with physically assaulting an officer. Branden Kennedy is facing several felonies including Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer and Strangulation as well as misdemeanor counts of Resisting, Criminal Damage Property, and Disorderly Conduct.

A Columbus Police officer was investigating a disorderly conduct complaint at a residence around 11:30pm Wednesday. Authorities say the suspect in question, reportedly identified as Kennedy, lunged at the officer who fell to the ground and struck his head. The 39-year-old Kennedy allegedly strangled and choked the officer. A taser was deployed but it was not effective.

A Columbia County Sherriff’s deputy and his K-9 arrived on scene and Kennedy reportedly continued to be defiant but was eventually taken into custody. Columbus Police officials say Kennedy was transported to the hospital where he became violent again and was tased additional times with limited results. Medical staff were able to sedate him. The officer injured was treated and released from the hospital.

Bond was set at $10,000 during Kennedy’s initial appearance and he is due back in court next month.
