(Waupun) A needed project at Waupun Correctional was approved by the governor’s State Building Commission. The Commission recently signed off on roughly $262-million-dollars in key projects across the state.
Authorization was given to upgrade the cameras at the Waupun prison, including transitioning cameras from analog to digital. Other work includes replacing cameras in the Restrictive Housing Unit, which state officials say will further the safety of staff and individuals in the care of the Department of Corrections.
Issues with the facility’s cameras were outlined during a press conference by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office following their investigation into four deaths at the prison. It was stated that one of the decedents was in a camera equipped cell, but the camera was unusable for safety observations due to poor lens conditions.
Governor Tony Evers says the projects approved are critically important for folks across the state. Other projects that the Commission authorized include upgrades to the Milwaukee Mile Speedway, the construction of a new technology and education center at UW-Green Bay, and the land purchase for the new Wisconsin Veterans Museum.
