Work Begins On I-94 Near Johnson Creek

(JOHNSON CREEK) Drivers heading through Johnson Creek should expect nighttime lane and ramp closures starting Monday as road work begins along a busy stretch of I-94.

Crews are set to start preliminary work April 27 on a $3.9 million project focused on the I-94 and Highway 26 interchange in Jefferson County. The work will cover about 1.25 miles of roadway and ramps, aiming to smooth out pavement and extend the life of nearby bridges.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says much of the project centers on repairing concrete surfaces, replacing worn sections of pavement and updating shoulders along the interstate and ramps. Crews will also resurface the nearby park-and-ride lot on North Watertown Street and upgrade curb ramps to improve accessibility.

Bridge repairs are also planned where I-94 crosses Highway 26.

LaLonde Contractors is leading the project, which is expected to wrap up in August, weather permitting.

While most of the work will happen at night to limit daytime disruptions, drivers should still plan ahead, slow down in work zones and watch for changing traffic patterns.

State officials also remind drivers that handheld phone use is banned in Wisconsin work zones, and staying focused behind the wheel is critical as construction ramps up.
