Unemployment Edges Up Again Across Local Counties

(UNDATED) More people across the area were out of work in February, continuing the post-holiday slowdown seen at the start of the year.

New numbers from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development show unemployment rose again from January to February in Dodge, Jefferson, Fond du Lac, and Columbia counties.

Dodge Countyโ€™s unemployment rate climbed to 3.7% in February, up from 3.2% in January โ€” a half-point increase.

Jefferson County saw a similar jump, rising to 3.9% from 3.5%, a 0.4-point increase over the month.

In Fond du Lac County, unemployment increased to 3.8%, up from 3.4% โ€” also a 0.4-point rise.

Columbia Countyโ€™s rate moved up to 4.1% in February, compared to 3.7% in January, another 0.4-point increase.

The report shows nearly every county in Wisconsin experienced a month-to-month increase in unemployment in February, continuing a statewide trend following seasonal job losses earlier this winter.

Even with the increases, unemployment rates across the region remain relatively low by historical standards.
