Wayland Academy Staff Member Wins Navy Impact Influence Award

(Beaver Dam) A Wayland Academy faculty member was recently given the Navy Impact Influence Award. James Cleary was presented with the award that recognizes innovative educators who have inspired kids to join the Navy.

Ensign Alexander Idonije, Wayland Class of 2016, nominated Cleary for the award. Idonije was recently accepted to the U.S. Navy’s Intelligence Officer Program, one of the branch’s most challenging academic programs. He says one thing that he admires about the Navy is that they are always encouraged to reflect on leadership that impacted them and changed the trajectory of their life. Idonije adds that when he looks back to his formative years at Wayland, the one person who sticks out is Cleary.

A teacher at the coed college preparatory school in Beaver Dam since 2010, Cleary says receiving this award means the world to him coming from Idonije who he called a tremendous student and leader. He adds that it is also very meaningful to get something from one of the branches of the Armed Forces, because he has so much respect and admiration for the people who serve in uniform. Cleary is also chair of Wayland’s English department and coaches the cross country as well as the track and field teams.
