Waupun mayor urges caution as electric scooter use picks up for summer

WAUPUN — As summer break begins, Waupun Mayor Rohn Bishop is asking families to talk with young riders about electric scooter safety.

In his May 30 mayor’s column published by Waupun Pioneer, Bishop said the city has received more questions about scooters as children begin riding more often in warmer weather. He urged riders to be careful around cars and pedestrians and recommended helmets for children.

Wisconsin law defines an electric scooter as a device weighing less than 100 pounds, with handlebars and an electric motor, powered by motor and human power, and capable of no more than 20 miles per hour on a paved level surface. State law also says electric scooter riders on sidewalks must yield to pedestrians or bicyclists, use due care and give an audible signal when passing.
