Watertown Police Department See Uptick In Scams

(Watertown) The Watertown Police Department say they have been investigating several different scam complaints. Some of the scams involve apartment rentals where all of the interactions are electronic, there is money transferred for a deposit or an application fee, but the apartment was never really for rent. Others have a victim believing they have a past due bill or that a family member of a friend is in dire need of money.

Authorities say they have also seen scammers contacting a victim about their phone or computer being hacked or that there is malware on their device. They add that the scammer will have the victim download an app that gives them complete access to their cellphone or computer. Following these actions will typically compromise the victimโ€™s bank account or other financial information.

Officials with the Watertown Police Department encourage the public to double check with family or friends if they are the ones asking for money. They also recommend not sending funds or deposit checks to someone you do not know and to never provide confidential information such as security, credit card, or bank account numbers. Law enforcement adds that if something sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.
