Two Wisconsin Hospital Systems Halt Gender-Affirming Care for Minors

(UNDATED) Two of Wisconsin’s largest hospital systems say they’re no longer providing gender-affirming care to patients under 18.

Children’s Wisconsin and UW Health System both cited “recent federal actions” as the reason. The Trump administration announced in December it would block all Medicaid and Medicare funding for any services at hospitals that provide gender-affirming care to minors.

“This is excellent news for the children of Wisconsin, especially those struggling with gender dysphoria,” said Wisconsin Family Action Legislative Director Samuel Krebs. “We believe that affirming a mistaken identity isn’t loving or compassionate or medically sound.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics says it continues to support access to gender-affirming care.

“These rules are a baseless intrusion into the patient-physician relationship,” AAP President Susan J. Kressly, M.D., FAAP, said in a statement. “Patients, their families, and their physicians — not politicians or government officials — should be the ones to make decisions together about what care is best for them.

Children’s Wisconsin and UW Health System issued statements this week, but declined to answer reporters’ follow-up questions.
