(Juneau) A Juneau-based food pantry says they had a successful 2022 and look forward to building on those successes in the coming year. Officials with the Gathering Source say they continue to experience significant increases in demand for their services. They add that the stress of household budgets of increasing food and other costs, including the cessation of free meals at schools for all students, are primary divers.
Officials note that their community awareness efforts are attracting more households to The Gathering Source for assistance. Throughout 2022, the pantry served 42-percent more households and 56-percent more members than the year prior. This included 213 new households with 625 new members.
The non-profits school supply filled backpacks are up 21-percent to 180 last year and weekend meal packs are still provided to students in need. The Gathering Source is a local service provider as over 95-percent of the households served are within a 10-mile radius.
