Strong Storms Roll Through Area Downing Trees, Power Lines

(Oshkosh) Thunderstorms brought pea-sized to penny-sized hail and strong winds to the area Thursday afternoon. Winds speeds were reported from 50 to 60 miles an hour or higher downing trees, branches and some power lines.

Alliant Energy reported thousands of late afternoon outages in the area. Over 200 customers were without power in the Beaver Dam area another 300 in Mayville and around 50 in Fox Lake. The Hartford area was said to have as many as 2500 customers in the dark Thursday. Friday morning, there are around three dozen in the dark in Hartford and another three dozen near Alto. There are also currently scattered outages in Campbellsport, Lomira and the Town of Elba.

Houses were damaged by falling trees in Baraboo; no injuries were reported.

Two boaters on Big Green Lake ran into problems during Thursday afternoon’s thunderstorms. A sailboat overturned on the south shore putting a 76-year-old Illinois man into the water. He was rescued by another boater. A young kayaker was also reportedly unaccounted for, but a short time later he was also found safe. Green Lake County Sheriff’s officials responded to both calls. Neither boater was injured.
