Snowmobiler Airlifted After Hitting Tree on Oakfield Trail

(OAKFIELD) A Fond du Lac man was flown to a hospital Monday after crashing his snowmobile on a trail east of Oakfield.

The crash happened around 12:45 p.m. on a trail about two-thirds of a mile east of County Highway Y and Vielbig Road, according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office. The rider, who was alone at the time, called for help after losing control in a left-hand curve and hitting a tree.

Rescuers used UTVs from the Oakfield and Lamartine fire departments to reach him and bring him back to the roadway. Because of the injuries he suffered, Flight for Life flew him to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center–Neenah. Deputies say his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

Investigators say speed likely played a role. The man was thrown about 30 feet from the machine but was wearing a helmet and chest protector, which authorities noted in their report. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also assisted at the scene.
