(Wisconsin) The RAND Corporation recently released their latest Hospital Price Transparency Survey which found that Wisconsin is ranked fifth among states with the highest hospital prices.
Using Medicare reimbursement amounts as a benchmark, Wisconsinites paid for hospital services averaging 318 percent of what Medicare would have paid for the same services. Across all states, the average prices were 257 percent of Medicare. The survey also found that prices widely varied at different sites of care, with the most cost-effective being telehealth and office visits.ย
Relative hospital prices in nearby states highlight the disparities seen in the study. Relative hospital prices in Michigan (192%) and Iowa were among the lowest. The survey found that there is a variation between providers for comparable services and that the discrepancy is not the result of differences in quality or cost-shifting.
