(Beaver Dam) Dedication to the community and their ongoing Bear Program has earned the Partners of Beaver Dam Community Hospital another Partners of WHA WAVE award. At a convention held in Appleton earlier this month, The Partners of BDCH were praised for their emergency department program which supplies clothes to those in need and handmade teddy bears to children in need of comfort. The Bear Program was started in 2002 with an initial budget of $300 which has increased to a current budget of #3,500 which is funded through the partners ongoing fundraising efforts. The program sees the Partners of BDCH hand sewing nearly 900 bears each year to comfort children in the ER as well as children coming out of surgery. Director of Surgery, Melody Trentham, says “The bears the partners provide our pediatric patients not only bring smiles to their faces when they wake, but a comforting warmth to aid in their healing.” In the 17 years since the programs creation, countless hours of service have gone into the program with much of the materials for the bears being donated by local individuals and community groups.
