(MADISON) Students from Beaver Dam, Dodgeland, Fall River, Mayville, Randolph and Watertown are getting ready to show what they can do — and compete for a shot at nationals.
More than 1,700 students from across Wisconsin will take part in the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference April 7 and 8 in Madison. Among them are students from Beaver Dam High School, Dodgeland High School, Fall River High School, Mayville Senior High School, Randolph High School and Riverside Middle School in Watertown.
The two-day event brings together middle school, high school and college students to compete in more than 60 hands-on contests. Those range from welding and carpentry to robotics, video production and health-related fields.
For students in these local communities, the competition is a chance to test real-world skills in front of industry professionals — and to see how they stack up against others from around the state.
Events will take place at the Alliant Energy Center and Madison Area Technical College. Competitions begin the morning of April 8, following an opening ceremony the day before.
Winners in each category move on to the national SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta this June.
The event is free and open to the public, giving families and community members a chance to watch students in action as they prepare for careers in skilled trades and technical fields.
