(FRIESLAND) A Friesland farm is getting state funding to test new ways to grow potatoes while using less fertilizer.
Alsum Farms was awarded a $40,000 grant through a Wisconsin program focused on improving how nitrogen is used on farm fields. The goal is to help farmers grow crops more efficiently while protecting soil and water.
The project at Alsum Farms will focus on Russet Reveille potatoes, studying how to better time and manage nitrogen applications during the growing season.
State agriculture officials say efforts like this can help reduce runoff and improve water quality, while still supporting strong crop yields.
The funding is part of the stateโs Commercial Nitrogen Optimization Pilot Program, which supports on-farm research in partnership with the University of Wisconsin.
Alsum Farms is one of 18 projects selected statewide for this round of funding.
