Local Law Enforcement Reminds Residents About Fireworks Rules And Safety

DODGE COUNTY – Local law enforcement is reminding residents to know the rules before lighting fireworks during the Fourth of July holiday.

Speaking on a recent episode of Community Comment, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt said many people misunderstand the permit they receive when buying fireworks. Schmidt said that permit may allow possession in the municipality where it was issued, but it does not automatically allow someone to transport or use fireworks in another city, village, or town.

Schmidt said the only entity that can give legal permission to shoot fireworks is the municipality where they will be used. He said public permits are rarely issued.

Beaver Dam Police Department’s Jeremiah Johnson said the city’s basic rule is that “if it goes up or it blows up,” it is illegal in Beaver Dam. He said sparklers, snakes, and fountains of sparks are generally allowed, while bottle rockets and firecrackers are not.

Johnson said the fine for illegal fireworks in Beaver Dam starts at $134.

Both officials also urged residents to keep safety in mind. Schmidt said alcohol and fireworks should not be mixed, and fireworks should be kept away from children, buildings, vehicles, and spectators. He encouraged residents to attend organized public displays when possible.

Johnson said fireworks complaints in Beaver Dam should go to the police department’s non-emergency line at 920-887-4612. He said 911 should be used when there is a fire, injury, or immediate danger.

Schmidt also said the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office app is a good way to submit non-emergency fireworks complaints in Dodge County.
