iPhone Alerts to Serious Crash in Lomira

(LOMIRA) A crash that left a car hidden hundreds of feet from the road sent a Milwaukee woman to the hospital Friday morning in the Village of Lomira.

The Dodge County Sheriffโ€™s Office says deputies were alerted just after 9 a.m. by an automated crash notification from an iPhone. The alert included GPS coordinates, which led a sheriffโ€™s sergeant to Industrial Drive between East Avenue and Main Street.

When the sergeant arrived, he found a single vehicle off the roadway near a tree line, more than 50 yards from Industrial Drive. The driver was the only person inside the car and was incoherent with suspected serious injuries, authorities said.

The woman was taken to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac and is expected to be transferred to St. Maryโ€™s Hospital in Madison. Her injuries are considered serious but not life-threatening, according to the sheriffโ€™s office. Authorities later identified her as a 37-year-old from Milwaukee.

Investigators say the car had been traveling south on Industrial Drive when it left the roadway, entered a field, went over a hill, crossed a frozen retention pond, and struck the opposite bank before vaulting into the tree line.

A medical condition may have contributed to the crash, though the investigation is ongoing. Speed and improperly wearing a seat belt were also factors in the severity of the injuries, deputies said.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Wisconsin State Patrol, Lomira Fire Department and First Responders, Mayville EMS, Theresa Fire Department, and Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue paramedics. A medical helicopter was requested but could not fly because of weather and visibility conditions.

The crash remains under investigation.
