Horicon School District Is Going To Referendum

(Horicon) The Horicon School Board Monday night formally approved plans to go to referendum this spring. The first question totals $22.9-million dollars and includes building a new elementary school next to the high school as well as updating secure entrances. The district office would also be relocated to the high school. The mill rate impact of question one would be an increase of .68-cents per one-thousand dollars of assessed value. The second question would cost $3.6-million dollars and address infrastructure needs at the junior/senior high facility such as roof repairs, upgrading their HVAC system, updating electrical lines, and laying new ceiling and floor tiles in their hallways. The mill rate impact is anticipated to be $1.08 per one thousand dollars of assessed value, if both are approved. Superintendent Rich Apple says the district hopes both will pass but each could be approved on their own. A vote of 51-percent is needed for the referendum questions to pass. Apple says he will be holding discussion opportunities at several locations throughout the district to answer any questions residents have about the referendum.

The first referendum reads “be it resolved by the School Board of the School District of Horicon, Dodge County, Wisconsin that there shall be issued pursuant to Chapter 67 of the Wisconsin Statutes, general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $22,920,000 for the public purpose of paying the cost of a school building and improvement program to create a consolidated campus and consisting of:  the construction of a new Elementary School addition and site improvements at the Junior/Senior High School; the construction of an addition for a High School cafeteria and secure entrance and renovations and safety and security upgrades at the Junior/Senior High School; and acquisition of furnishings, fixtures and equipment.”

The second referendum reads “be it resolved by the School Board of the School District of Horicon, Dodge County, Wisconsin that there shall be issued pursuant to Chapter 67 of the Wisconsin Statutes, general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $3,600,000 for the public purpose of paying the cost of a school improvement program consisting of:  building infrastructure and capital maintenance improvements at the Junior/Senior High School; and acquisition of furnishings, fixtures and equipment.”
