(Waupun) The former warden at Waupun Correctional Institution entered into a plea agreement Monday. Randall Hepp entered a no contest plea to a misdemeanor charge of Violating State/County Institution Laws.
He had originally been facing a felony count of Misconduct in Office in connection to the deaths of two prisoners. Hepp was found guilty of the misdemeanor and a Dodge County judge ordered he pay a $500 fine and court costs.
In total, nine state employees were charged in the deaths of two inmates at Waupun Correctional. The Dodge County medical examiner determined that one of the deaths was a homicide after an autopsy revealed the man died from malnutrition and dehydration.
The other prisoner was found in his cell 12 hours after he suffered a stroke. Cases remain open against six others who have been charged.
A correctional officer, Sarah Ransbottom, entered a similar plea deal with state prosecutors. Charges were dropped against Jeramie Chalker, who was a correctional sergeant.
