Former Officer Avoids Conviction in Child Abuse Case

(PORTAGE) A former Portage police officer accused of seriously injuring his infant son will avoid a conviction for now after reaching an agreement in court.

Cameron Coronado entered a no contest plea Monday to a child abuse charge tied to allegations he forced a pacifier into his babyโ€™s mouth with enough force to cause a brain bleed.

Instead of finding him guilty, a Columbia County judge put the case on hold for two years under a deferred judgment agreement. That means Coronado is not convicted at this point, but must follow a set of conditions ordered by the court. If he completes those requirements, the charge could be dismissed. If he violates them, the case can return and he could be convicted and sentenced.

A second charge โ€” disorderly conduct with a domestic abuse modifier โ€” was dismissed as part of the agreement.

In court, the judge also approved changes to Coronadoโ€™s bond, removing a no-contact provision and converting it to a $1,000 signature bond. He would only have to pay that amount if he violates the terms of his release.

The case stems from allegations filed in August, when prosecutors said doctors found injuries consistent with force, including a brain bleed and damage to the babyโ€™s mouth.

Coronado, 33, was a patrol officer with the Portage Police Department at the time. He separated from the department around the same time charges were filed.
