(Fond du Lac) Fond du Lac County’s new way of finding 911 callers via GPS “what3words” has already seen a few success stories. Communications and Emergency Management Director Amy Haase says the app translates GPS coordinates from degrees, minutes and seconds or decimal degrees longitude and latitude to three words for a 3 meter by 3 meter map grid.
Haase says it is more precise and significantly reduces the chances of getting the wrong location to first responders via their radio or mobile device. She says in late August they used what3words to find an elderly man in a cornfield and an injured paraglider in another cornfield.
The emergency management director says anyone can download the app for their phone. Haase previously served as emergency management director for Dodge County.
