FBI Investigating Death Of Waupun Prisoner

(WAUPUN) The FBI is looking into the death of a Waupun inmate. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the FBI is investigating the death of Donald Maier who died at Waupun Correctional Institution in early 2024.

The 62-year-old passed away due to probable malnutrition and dehydration. Water had been shut off to his cell for significant periods of time due to flooding concerns and was not properly documented.

His death was ruled a homicide and led to charges being brought against multiple staff and the former warden Randall Hepp. Hepp ended up pleading no contest to a reduced misdemeanor charge of violating the law of a state or county institution.

The family of Donald Maier have also filed a federal civil rights and wrongful death lawsuit against the Wisconsin Department of Corrections leadership and prison staff.
