(WAUPUN) Governor Tony Evers is moving forward with plans to revamp the state’s corrections facilities. His administration will be asking the State Building Commission to release $15-million dollars to begin work across several Department of Corrections facilities.
A part of the comprehensive project will be to convert Waupun Correctional Institution into a state-of-the-art, medium security prison. Creating the state’s first “vocational village.”
These facilities focus on vocational training and workforce readiness to make sure those incarcerated have the resources, training, and skills to join the workforce.
The Waupun prison will close temporarily during major renovations. This includes demolishing the existing cell halls and replacing them with modern housing.
The governor’s prison plan also includes closing Green Bay Correctional and Lincoln Hills and Copper Lake Schools. Capital projects will take place at the John C. Burke Correctional Center, which is located in Waupun.
