Dodge County Teen Sworn-In As Dodge County Sheriff For A Day

(Juneau) A teen from the community got to take on the role of Dodge County sheriff for a day. Sheriff Dale Schmidt offered up the experience as part of this year’s Good Karma Brand’s John Moser Children’s Radiothon. Michael Smith’s father was the winning bidder and last Thursday, the 13-year-old was sworn-in by Dodge County Clerk Karen Gibson as Sheriff for the Day.

After the ceremony, Michael was provided with some sheriff’s gear and was given a personalized shirt. He also toured the jail as well as courthouse and met Judge Martin DeVries. Michael took part in K-9 demonstrations with Sergeant Joe Nicholas, joined the sheriff’s office SWAT team, and rode in an armored vehicle.

Sheriff Michael Smith patrolled the waters of Beaver Dam Lake with Deputy Mike Matoushek and accompanied Dale Schmidt as they ran traffic enforcement around the county. They even pulled over a few motorists who failed to follow traffic laws.

Michael indicated it was difficult to pick his favorite part, but says he did enjoy the K-9 demonstrations.

Schmidt says it was an honor to have Michael for the day and it was a win-win for all involved. He adds that money was raised to support children in the community and Michael had an experience he will not soon forget.
