DNR: Wisconsin River Near Portage Reaches Major Flood Stage

(PORTAGE) People living along the Wisconsin River in Columbia County are being warned to prepare as water levels continue to rise and flooding risks grow.

State officials say the river near Portage reached nearly 20 feet Thursday afternoon — already in major flood stage — and could crest at 21 feet by Friday morning. That level raises serious concerns about the stability of the Caledonia-Lewiston levee.

“This is a very serious situation,” said Chris Bender with the Department of Natural Resources. “The levee should not be expected to provide protection from Wisconsin River flooding during this event.”

Crews are monitoring the levee closely, but access to nearby areas is being limited as conditions change. Pine Island Wildlife Area is already closed, and people are being urged to stay away from the levee and surrounding المناطق while crews work.

Officials say those in low-lying areas should stay alert for updates and be ready to act if evacuations become necessary. Emergency alerts would be sent if the levee fails.

Local governments are also making sandbags available in Portage and Wyocena for people looking to protect their property.

Drivers are being reminded not to go around barricades or drive through flooded roads. Even a small amount of moving water can carry a vehicle away.

Emergency managers say the situation can shift quickly — and they’re asking people to take it seriously and stay informed.
