(WISCONSIN) With boating season winding down, state officials are still prioritizing safety on local waters. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources urges all boaters to wear their life jackets this fall.
There have been 13 boating fatalities so far in 2025, and in many cases a life jacket was not worn.
April Dombrowski with the DNR says boating emergencies happen in a blink of an eye and wearing a life jacket is the most effective way to protect yourself.
One wearable life jacket is required for each person on board a boat and must fit properly. In addition to the wearable life jackets, a throwable personal flotation device, such as a ring buoy or standard seat cushion, is required for every boat longer than 16 feet.
Some key safety reminders for boaters planning fall outings include:
- Wear your life jacket. Ensure it is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted life jacket. Hypothermia can impair your ability to swim or stay afloat, and a life jacket drastically increases your chances of survival if you fall overboard.
- Dress appropriately.ย Layer your clothing to manage changing temperatures.
- Check weather and water conditions before leaving.ย Cold fronts or storms can quickly create dangerous boating conditions.
- Avoid alcohol. Alcohol impairs judgment and slows reaction times, reducing your ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
- Tell someone your boating plans.ย Always let someone on shore know your departure time, route and expected return time.
- Check your equipment before heading out. Carry safety equipment such as a whistle, throw rope, first aid kit and a charged cell phone in a waterproof case.
