DNR Reminds Hunters to Put Safety First as Gun-Deer Season Opens

As Wisconsin’s nine-day gun-deer season kicks off Saturday, the state’s Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters — safety comes first.

Fond du Lac County Conservation Warden Bill Hankee says the basics start with visibility. Hunters should wear blaze orange or fluorescent pink from the waist up — including hats or hoodies — so others can clearly see them in the woods.

He also urges hunters to remember TABK:

  • Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.
  • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.
  • Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.

If you harvest a deer, you’ll need to register it by 5 p.m. the next day — either online or by calling the number listed on your hunting license.

The season runs through Sunday, November 30.
