DNR Encourages ATV-UTV Safe Riding Over Independance Day Weekend

(Madison) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging ATV and UTV riders to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday responsibly, ride sober, keep their speed in check. So far this year, 17 people have been killed in ATV/UTV crashes.

Most of them were not wearing seatbelts or helmets, and alcohol and speed were also contributing factors. Choosing to wear the appropriate safety gear operating responsibly significantly reduces the chance of severe injury or crash.

DNR off-highway vehicle administrator Lieutenant Warden Jacob Holsclaw says there are no good outcomes when alcohol, speed, and poor decisions are mixed and says it is important to remember that all injury-including crashes can be prevented by taking the proper precautions. One of the best things operators can do to operate safely is take an online safety course.

Additional items to keep in mind are never consume alcohol or drugs before or during your ride, never travel in unfamiliar areas, and follow all posted speed limits and regulatory signs.
