DNR Asking Public To Help Search For Aquatic Invasive Species

(Madison) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension are inviting the public to help search for aquatic invasive species across the state on Saturday, August 10.

Snapshot Day is a statewide effort to protect Wisconsin streams, lakes, and wetlands by monitoring designated sites for invasive plants and animals that may threaten Wisconsin’s wildlife and water ecosystems.

The effort is entering its 11th year and is coordinated by the UW-Extension in partnership with the DNR and the Citizen Lake Monitoring Network. Volunteer efforts are crucial to the success of monitoring invasive species, and information collected during the event will provide the DNR with data to help inform and guide management and control activities.

A 2023 Snapshot Day Volunteer, Dawn Nelsen, says that gathering samples of invasive species is a great way to give the DNR a heads up on invasives that may have recently arrived in a particular waterbody.

Those interested in participating must register online by August 9. Volunteers who sign up will meet at a local training site of their choosing on August 10 to learn how to identify invasive species before heading out to monitor. All are welcome, but it is recommended for ages eight and up.

All minors must be accompanied by an adult. A link to register online is available HERE
