DC Highway Department Applies Anti-Icing Material

(Juneau) The Dodge County Highway Department is highlighting their pro-active approach to keep area roads safe for drivers. The department says they have been getting asked a lot lately why they are applying anti-icing brine on dry roads on clear days.

The reason is the current unusual weather pattern for mid-December. Officials with the highway department say warm days result in sweating pavement while freezing nights result in frosty pavement.

They add that these conditions are not anticipated by motorists which is leading to a higher number of runoffs.ย ย

To combat this issue, the highway department applies an anti-icing material that is a blend of water, salt, and a product that reduces corrosion.

Officials note that applying brine is a fast, cost-effective option to protect county roads from early morning frost conditions. They say the treatment is typically effective for three to five days.ย
