(Beaver Dam) Members of the Beaver Dam Police Department hosted an open discussion on Flock cameras Tuesday night. The agency has implemented a system of Automatic License Plate Reader cameras around the city.
While the cameras have been around since the early 1980โs, its technology has seen growth with the improvement of artificial intelligence used to recognize and convert images to searchable databases.ย ย
The implantation is a driving force as to why the Flock system has become popular among law enforcement agencies around the county.
Tuesdayโs discussion was led by Sergeant Jesse Shiltz and Detective Dan Kuhnz who highlighted the Flock cameras and address community concerns. One of those concerns was the mass collection of data, which Kuhnz says is not new.ย
โIf youโre watching this video on Facebook or whether using a cellphone orโฆreally any technology that youโre using thereโs a mass collection of data by some sort of entity whether it be FacebookโฆGoogleโฆAppleโฆall of those things,โ says Kunz. โThat data is retained by Flock and the reason that I say that is because when we go out and search Flock for what weโre looking forโฆthat is where we take sort of our responsibility seriously to safeguard that information.โ
