Columbus & Waupun Boys Meet In Sectional Semifinal at BDHS Tonight

The Columbus and Waupun boys basketball teams head to Beaver Dam High School tonight for a WIAA Division Three Sectional Semifinal at 7pm.

Columbus (16-8) earned the Regional championship with victories over Wautoma (76-57) and Laconia (60-55) this past weekend.  Senior Ben Emler leads the Cardinals in scoring at 20 points per game.  Fellow senior Alex Campbell also averages in double-figures at 10 points per game.  Columbus finished in a tie for 2nd place Lodi in the Capitol North Conference with a 7-3 record.  Lake Mills won the league with a 9-1 mark.

Waupun (16-8) defeated Mayville (69-60) and Ripon (44-42) in last week’s Regional to advance to Sectional play.  A trio of seniors lead the Warriors in scoring led by Gabe Keach at 18ppg. Keegan Hartgerink (17) and Jaden White (11) also average double-digits for Waupun.   The Warriors finished in a three-way tie for 4th place in the East Central Conference this season.   Plymouth was the conference champ.

These teams met in the 2019-20 season opener with Waupun picking up the 76-53 win at Columbus.  Gabe Keach led Waupun with 24 while Ben Emler paced the Cardinals with a game high 25.

Tonight’s game is a rematch of last year’s D2 Sectional Semifinal in Beaver Dam where Waupun picked up the 79-36 victory.

The winner of tonight’s game heads to the Sectional Final in Evansville to face either Beloit or Edgerton on Saturday night at 7pm.
