Columbus Football Working Toward Spring Season

Despite pushing their football season to the Spring because of coronavirus, Columbus High School football players continue to work hard this Fall.  Head coach Calvin Zenz tells DailyDodge.com that even though their fall season was postponed his team has stayed excited about football and are working hard in preparations for the alternate Spring campaign.

Zenz says that if weather cooperates, he hopes to get six to eight contact days in before basketball season start.  He adds that his players have shown dedication to getting better going way back to when quarantine started.  He says his guys have been working out on their own, whether its running in the gym or lifting weights.  Zenz says that his kids are buying into the culture they are building and showing great leadership, led by his seniors.  He says kids understand that if you are going to play in Columbus, you will work hard and be “all in” and is excited to see their enthusiasm for the game.

Coach Zenz says that on Friday night’s have been a little “depressing” with no football to coach.  Not being able to go to many games because of attendance limitations, he has been usually watching games on YouTube to get his football fix.

The Cardinals were invited to be a part of the 12 team Rock Valley Conference for the alternate spring season.  The league will be split into a large and small division.  Columbus will play a five-game conference schedule with Lodi, Beloit, Big Foot, Edgerton and Clinton.  They are still looking to add a non-conference game.

Zenz says the coaches still need to vote on it, but expects the teams to be competing for a conference championship and also name an all-conference team.  He says that’s one of the positives to moving to the spring is being able to compete for a league title and such.  If they had stayed in the fall it would have been all non-conference games.  Now they will be able to set legitimate goals.

Practice for the alternate spring season is set to begin on March 8th and he says they already have volunteers ready to help shove and plow the field if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate.
