(Columbus) Mayor Joe Hammer read a proclamation for Captain Jake Bisbee of the Columbus Fire Department who retired in January after 18 years of service.
Bisbee was appointed to the department in January of 2021, by the Police and Fire Commission with over 15 years of prior experience with the Monona Fire Department. First Assistant Chief for Fire 2 Dan Eklof says Bisbee was a very brave firefighter.ย
โBut in September of 2017, we had a structure fire with a[n] individual that was in the home,โ says Eklof. โHe was barricaded, and he was returning fire on law enforcement. The house started on fire. Jake and one of our other career firefighters [were] fighting that fire behind a bulletproof shield. He was recognized by the sheriff of Dane County as one of the braves firefighters that heโs ever seen. He stood up there. He prevented another house from burning down.โ
Eklof says that the individual that was barricaded was ultimately apprehended, and the only thing lost during the fire was the house.
