(Columbia County) A multi-department collaboration is being credited by the Portage Fire Department in efforts that saved the life of a hunter in the overnight hours. At 12:41AM Thursday morning, the Portage Fire Department was dispatched to N8251 Schultz Road in the township of Lewiston to assist the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office with locating and rescuing a male patient lost in the woods. The individual, a male hunter, left to track a deer at about 4:30pm on Wednesday afternoon. His ATV was located and following his tracks the hunter was found in a drainage ditch with a wound to the inside of his right leg, with the patient stating he was gored by a buck. Reports state he was disoriented and possibly suffering from hypothermia. Med Flight was contacted and made a difficult landing in a nearby field while rescue workers prepped the patient to be extricated from the area. The Wisconsin DNR, and Aspirus MedEvac, assisted at the scene.
