(BEAVER DAM) People in Beaver Dam may notice officers using a new piece of equipment during tense calls — and police say it’s designed to keep everyone safer.
The Beaver Dam Police Department has begun using the WRAP Restraint System, a full-body restraint meant to reduce the risk of injury for both officers and people who are agitated or combative during an encounter.
Police say the device may look unfamiliar, but it’s built around safety. The WRAP securely immobilizes a person’s legs and torso while keeping them upright, a position that helps protect proper breathing and lowers the risk of harm.
The restraint is already used by law enforcement agencies, emergency medical services and corrections departments across the country. Beaver Dam police say it gives officers another option in situations where someone is struggling or in distress and traditional methods could lead to injury.
Every officer in the department has now completed training on how to apply the WRAP safely and correctly, according to police.
Department leaders say the goal is not control for its own sake, but reducing injuries and treating people with dignity during some of the most difficult moments officers encounter.
Police emphasized that community safety remains the priority, along with the well-being of everyone involved in a call — officers and residents alike.
