(Beaver Dam) With the ordinance allowing the use of all-terrain vehicles on city streets in Beaver Dam, local law enforcement say there are few measures operators must follow. Beaver Dam Police Lieutenant Jeremiah Johnson says it is no different if you were behind the wheel of a motor-vehicle.
โSo, you have to have a driverโs license, wear your seatbelt, register your ATV with the state of Wisconsin,โ says Johnson. โWhen youโre on the road, stop at the stop signs, follow the signs, you know, ride single file in the lane. You canโt do two or three rows of ATVs down the road at side by side.โ
Johnson says that if folks are following the general rules of the road, they should be fine. The lieutenant notes that younger ATV/UTV operators will need to obtain a safety certificate.
โYou do have to have a safety certificate if you were born after the year 1988 in the state of Wisconsin,โ Johnson says. โYou gotta go online and take a little test that talks about specifically ATV UTV regulations, and thatโs a state law.โ
Johnson says another rule is anyone 16 and under are required to wear a helmet.
