Alliant Energy Must Unredact Beaver Dam Data Center Negotiations

(MADISON – WISC-TV) The Public Service Commission is requiring Alliant Energy to refile its data center negotiations with the Beaver Dam data center following concerns by advocates and residents.

The PSC currently is considering an Individual Contract Rate Agreement in which Alliant Energy is attempting to gain approval of a contract with a data center developer building a large facility in Beaver Dam.

Power Wisconsin Forward released the following statement highlighting the win for residents:

“Power Wisconsin Forward is encouraged by the PSC’s decision to require Alliant Energy to refile its proposed data center contract with fewer redactions. This is a meaningful win for the residents, small businesses and advocates who spoke up to ensure the public has the information needed to evaluate whether this agreement protects Alliant customers.”

The company stated the original filing limited publicly available information, including the amount of energy needed.

During the PSC’s Feb. 24. virtual public hearing on Alliant’s proposed data center contract, 86% of the reported verbal commenters raised concerns about the amount of redactions and 93% of commenters reportedly called for a rejection of the contract.

Additionally, the PSC has extended the public comment period from Tuesday to Monday, March 9. Power Wisconsin said the March 9 deadline remains insufficient as the updated, less-redacted information had only just been made available to the public, limiting advocates ability to fully review and meaningfully comment on the revised contract in a shortened timeframe.
