(BYRON) A weekend camping trip turned deadly Sunday morning when a fire tore through a camper in Fond du Lac County, killing a 35-year-old woman.
It happened just before 11 a.m. at Breezy Hill Campground on Cearns Lane in the Town of Byron. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers received multiple 911 calls at 10:56 a.m. reporting a camper on fire.
Investigators said an adult man and three children were able to get out of the camper safely. But a woman was still inside.
Deputies and firefighters from the Eden Fire Department and Fond du Lac Fire Rescue responded. As crews worked to put out the flames, they found the woman inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released her name.
The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area of the camper, according to the sheriff’s office. Firefighters were able to bring it under control quickly.
The man and three children were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The American Red Cross also responded to assist those affected.
The cause of the fire and the manner of death remain under investigation.
