(UNDATED) Wisconsin has once again led the nation in collecting unwanted prescription drugs during the latest Drug Take Back event, according to the state Department of Justice.
The fall 2025 Drug Take Back collection brought in 53,498 pounds of unused or expired medications — more than any other state in the country.
“Wisconsin’s continued success with Drug Take Back is really extraordinary,” Attorney General Josh Kaul said in a statement. “Thank you to the partners around the state whose efforts have helped make this such an outstanding program in Wisconsin.”
Since the national program began in 2010, Wisconsin has collected a total of 1,422,970 pounds of unwanted medications. That ranks the state third in the nation overall, behind only Texas and California. Across the country, the Drug Enforcement Administration reports more than 20 million pounds of medications collected since the program’s launch.
Drug Take Back events, held twice a year in spring and fall, offer a safe and convenient way for people to dispose of prescription medications while helping prevent misuse and environmental harm. The program is organized by the Wisconsin Department of Justice in partnership with the Department of Health Services and supported by local law enforcement and community partners.
Officials remind residents they don’t have to wait for the next event — more than 500 permanent drug drop boxes are available year-round at law enforcement agencies, hospitals, pharmacies and clinics statewide.
