Wisconsin Gold Star Families Can Now Personalize Plates At No Cost

MADISON – Gold Star families in Wisconsin can now personalize their specialty license plates at no cost.

Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced that the change took effect July 1. The governorโ€™s office says 2025 Wisconsin Act 50 permanently waives the $15 annual personalization fee for Gold Star Family license plates.

Gold Star plates are available to immediate family members of service members killed in the line of military duty. WisDOT says the plates already carry no annual special registration fee.

According to the governorโ€™s office, there are currently 483 active Gold Star license plates on Wisconsin roads. Of those, 296 are personalized.

WisDOT says eligible Wisconsin residents can order and personalize Gold Star license plates online through the stateโ€™s special plates website. The agency says Wisconsin DMV offers 70 types of special license plates, including eight military-related plates and 65 decals dedicated to military service.
