Wisconsin DNR Encourages Ice Safety Practice

(Madison) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources urges the public to practice ice safety on all Wisconsin’s waterbodies and remember that no ice is safe.

Frigid overnight temperatures often leave a thin layer of ice across smaller bodies of water, but the ice is not strong enough to support the weight of a person or machine.

Before heading out, check with local fishing clubs, bait shops, or outfitters about ice conditions. It is also important to know about lake characteristics. Look for inlets, outlets, and narrows that have currents or are spring-fed.

Some basic ice safety tips include carrying a phone to let people know where you are going and when you will return, wearing proper clothing and equipment, including a life jacket or float coat to help you stay afloat and help maintain body heat, and wearing ice creepers attached to boots to help prevent slipping on clear ice.
