WHA Report Shows Unprecedented Vacancy Rates In Health Care Professions

(Wisconsin) A new report from the Wisconsin Hospital Association shows unprecedented vacancy rates in health care professions. Ann Zenk with the WHA notes it’s been a developing concern for years. She says (quote)…“we know that our workforce can’t grow fast enough to keep up with demands of an aging population, as more and more of our Wisconsin population retires.”

Zenk says it’s an issue that’s been made worse by the pandemic. She says (quote)…“early in 2021, a lot of people took a deep breath and . . . said ‘I’m going to retire now.”

The combined factors resulted in an increase in vacancies in 13 of 17 professions tracked in Wisconsin Hospital Association’s Health Care Workforce Report. Registered nurse vacancy rates were the highest they have been since 2005.
