Waupun Memorial Hospital Raising Money To Fund School Lunches

(Waupun) SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital is raising money to school lunches for students in need. Officials with SSM Health say one in five children in America live with hunger. They add that some children miss meals and are faced with daily uncertainty about food as their parents try and balance buying groceries and paying bills.

The Waupun Area School District provides breakfast free to all of its students every day, however lunch must be purchased. While the district does offer free and reduced cost lunches to low-income families, the SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital Action Team is looking to help continue to support the students ensuring no child goes hungry.

Members of the Action Team say school lunch is critical to student health and well-being, it ensures they have the nutrition they need throughout the day to learn and grow. They add that research shows that receiving free or reduced cost lunches decreases food insecurity, obesity rates, and poor health.

The Action Team notes that it also has a positive impact on student food selection and consumption, especially for fruits and vegetables.

To help in this effort, the Action Team is placing a coin collection canister at the Waupun Memorial Hospital information desk from November 1st through the 30th to raise money for this cause.
