Waupun Girls Heading To Sectional Final

The Waupun High School girls basketball team outlasted Lake Mills 44-40 in a WIAA Division Three Sectional Semifinal at Beaver Dam High School on Thursday night.

The back and fourth contest saw each team makes runs, but neither were able to pull away.   With 8:00 minutes left in the 1st half and Waupun leading 14-13, Lake Mills went on a 6-0 burst to take a 19-14 lead with 6:13 left in the half.  Out of a timeout, the Warriors ripped off seven straight points over the next 2:05 to regain the 21-19 lead.  The L-Cats rifled off the final six points of the half to take 25-21 lead into the locker room.    The biggest run of the game, came to start the 2nd half as Waupun Kayl Petersen hit back to back triples in the first minute of play and to spark a 9-1 run to give Waupun a lead that they would never relinquish.

Petersen scored 13 of her game high 21 points in the 2nd half.  That included five three pointers. Lydia Aalsma and Gracie Gopalan each added seven for Waupun.

Emily Wollin led Lake Mills with 12 points.  NCAA Division Lipscomb recruit Bella Pitta was held to just one field goal and five points in the game. She scorched the Waupun for 30 points and 26 rebounds in their double-OT win at the Watertown holiday event.

Lake Mills season ends at 24-3 while Waupun improves to 20-7.  The defending WIAA Division Three State Champs will travel to Edgewood on Saturday at 1pm to face Prairie du Chien in the Sectional Final
